In an interview with El País, Dr. Julio Frenk, who participated in documentary writing and is the President of the University of Miami, explains why the mosquito is a growing global threat. Interview.

Why is it important for specialists to know the growing spread of the mosquito on the planet?

Because mosquitoes represent part of the complex ecosystems of which humans are also part. The problem is not the mosquitoes themselves, The problem is that humans change the habitat of mosquitoes and that causes them to appear in places that were not before.

Another problem is that with global warming there has been an expansion of mosquito habitat and now they can live at an altitude higher than they could not before.

Why do they say that the mosquito is a growing global threat, what figures do they have?

Mosquitoes are a growing global threat due to climate change. In addition, science has been very close to eradicating diseases such as malaria, however, due to the increase in temperature on the earth, some diseases have appeared again.

Why is it said that the mosquito is the most dangerous animal for humans?

This is due to the diseases it transmits, In addition, with globalization the viruses are easier to transmit from one continent to another, and if you look, in the animal kingdom there is no species that infects more diseases than mosquitoes.

The mosco unlike other species is not a predator and does not want to affect humans, simply fulfills its own life cycle, because they bite to suck blood and feed, the problem is that if it stings you and before stung another human That you have some disease, because you will be infected.

The Dengue

dengeu fever

It is an infectious disease transmitted by a virus that is transmitted by the bite of the mosquito Aedes aegypti. Each year this disease causes more than 600,000 deaths worldwide, most of them in children under 5 years.

There is currently no specific drug to treat dengue infection. It is advisable to visit the doctor to follow their recommendations, rest and drink plenty of fluids. The symptoms of this disease are headache, especially behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, nausea and abdominal pain.

The Zika

It is the last illness discovered, considered especially dangerous for pregnant women because it can lead to diseases such as microcephaly in the baby. The zika is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes.

This disease does not need specific treatment and patients must be at rest, drink enough liquids and take painkillers common for pain. There is currently no vaccine or specific treatment to combat this virus.

The most common symptoms are fever, rash, tiredness, muscle and joint pain.

Chikunguña

Chikunguña is a disease caused by a virus and transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes, specifically Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which become infected with the virus when they bite a person suffering from the disease.

This virus originated in Africa, in fact its name means “doubled by pain”, in the African language makonde. The disease has already spread to five continents and the incubation period of the virus is 3 to 7 days, before symptoms appear.

At present this disease has no specific treatment and no vaccine has been produced to prevent it; What is done, under the doctor’s precise instructions, is to combat symptoms such as fever and joint pain and dehydration.

The chikunguña can give only once.
